Christmas at Galeries Lafayette

Christmas at Galeries Lafayette

During a trip to Paris last week, I stopped off at my favourite department store in Paris – Galeries Lafayette. I always say I wouldn’t want to be 21 again and I stand by that. However, if my parents promise to take me to the Christmas Disney pop-up and roof gardens at Galeries Lafayette, I think I can deal with being 8 years old again. Magical window displays transporting little ones into a realm of princesses, talking animals and fun costumes. It’s like the Narnia of department stores. In keeping with the “Ball of the Century” theme, Cinderella’s magical carriage is displayed on the ground floor – go have a look!

Teaming up with French fashion house Louis Vuitton to present festive window displays based on the ‘The Ball of the Century’ (‘Noel de Siècle’) theme to mark the centenary of store’s landmark dome. Flamingos, chic bag-toting penguins and a dancing Panda in the luxurious Louis Vuitton windows: that’s right, faux animals dressed in Louis Vuitton. Sometimes life just isn’t fair.

With more than 5,000 crystals adorning this year’s centrepiece – a 69 foot Swarovski Christmas tree – not even the Christmas crowds could keep me out of the store. I must have spent 40 minutes just walking around the different floors taking photographs and generally acting like the tourist du jour. The chandelier alone enchants.

Every Christmas I leave Galeries Lafayette wondering just how they pull it off. I suppose that’s just one of those great festive mysteries.

If Galeries Lafayette and the sidewalk outside of the store weren’t so dreadfully crowded, I would love to go there right now. At least I have your beautiful pictures!

Oh la la, beautiful! I remember when I went to Lafayette to buy the first edition of Issey Miyake perfume (I think it was that year it was launched but could be wrong) and that scent will always remind me of my Paris days, as well as Galeries Lafayette (where I also used to buy Cacharel tights…) I wouldn’t mind being 19 again….at least for a little while.

Oh Cinz, you are a woman after my own heart. Even single time I go to Galeries Lafayette, the first thing I do is go to the beauty floor and look up. Do you have must-visit department stores in HK? I hope you had a lovely Christmas.
