Traditions: Friendship and Dessert

My yuzu religieuse Anne's mammoth sized mille-feuille Keeping the tradition alive!

How many times must you do something before it becomes a tradition? For the second consecutive December, the lovely Anne and I met for a little champagne and dessert at the Plaza Athénée. Our girlie chats in one of my favourite Parisian spots are something I greatly enjoy. We sat opposite ‘our’ 2011 table and what a difference a year makes! Last year, I cried into my champagne and sobbed about my life to poor Anne. This year, in-between mouthfuls of bliss, we giggled and shared positive plans for the year ahead.

To take home... Champagne, bien sûr ! Pretty flowers Festive outdoor seating Ice-skating rink in the courtyard of the Plaza Athénée

As if being in Paris with a friend wasn’t good enough, the food! Mon Dieu, the food! I’m all about the tea but I cannot even recall what I drank. Dessert at La Galeries des Gobelins needs no introduction but look at the size of Anne’s mille-feuille! That’s for one person! Naturally, a wee taste was called: the crunchy layers of pastry with vanilla cream highlight why mille-feuille is so popular around the world. My yuzu religieuse was sublime – creamy, tart with just a hint of sweetness. Topped with a velvet-like red rose petal, I like the merging of the Japanese flavours with the French pastry and seriously, how pretty is it!

I think we’ve decided that next year we’ll be donning ice skates and breaking out some moves but who knows. Ice skates or not, I’m looking forward to continuing our tradition of friendship and dessert.

Afternoon Tea at La Cour Jardin, Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris

La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée La Cour Jardin at the Hôtel Plaza AthénéeI never tire of Hotel Plaza Athénée. Seriously, it’s like my home away from home. La Galerie des Gobelins is my usual spot but on a warm summers day, only La Cour Jardin will do. Surrounded by red geraniums, the courtyard feels like a secret garden; somewhere to seek refuge from the heat and tourist takeover of Paris. Excuse the irony.

Carrie Bradshaw stayed at the Plaza Athénée in the final two episodes of Sex And The City and believe me, the hotel is as glamorous as the television series. In a typically Parisian manner, the luxury is in the details. Nothing is flaunted around – editors sit calmly and discuss the latest fashion trends as food writers gush over the elegantly prepared plat du jour (dish of the day). Located in the famous triangle d’Or (golden triangle), the hotel is surrounded by all of the elite fashion boutiques – Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior. This is the perfect place to stop and relax after doing some major damage to your credit card.

Put it this way, if you haven’t tried Christophe Michalak’s desserts, you haven’t lived! Over tea, une religieuse au caramel au beurre salé (salted caramel religieuse – no idea in English…) and une tartelette aux fraises des bois (wild strawberry tartlette), the making of a great friendship was cemented. That’s the thing about the Plaza Athénée – it is a place to make memories.

La Cour Jardin is open between May and September. Have you been there? I’m keen to hear about your experience.

Breakfast at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée Breakfast at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée

As if staying at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris isn’t a treat enough, breakfast in the Alain Ducasse restaurant is like being on a film set. I’ve never dined in such a spectacular place. I have a very bad habit of skipping breakfast but with crystal chandeliers glistening above, where better to enjoy my morning pot of tea and obligatory pain au chocolat than at Avenue Montaigne’s chicest hotel.

I have a weakness for maple syrup so the fluffy pancakes were a must. Served with a fruit platter to make my calorie-laden choice seem somewhat angelic, I relaxed with the morning paper and enjoyed what I consider the most elegant breakfast I’ve ever had. Seriously, breakfast never looked so glamorous. I cannot wait to go back.

Not Just Another Milla was a guest of Hotel Plaza Athénée.

Girl Chat and Dessert at Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris

I had the pleasure of catching up with lovely Anne here in Paris just after Christmas. We opted for a rather chic afternoon of sharing champagne and a very generous slice of Christophe Michalak’s chestnut & coconut dessert at the eternally fabulous Plaza Athénée. Pas mal ! Desserts are definitely a strong point here at La Galerie des Gobelins and when enjoyed in such a plush setting with great company, one appreciates every bite. An absolute must when in Paris.

PS – Could Anne have chosen a more perfect shade of red lipstick?! Gorgeous!
