I never tire of Hotel Plaza Athénée. Seriously, it’s like my home away from home. La Galerie des Gobelins is my usual spot but on a warm summers day, only La Cour Jardin will do. Surrounded by red geraniums, the courtyard feels like a secret garden; somewhere to seek refuge from the heat and tourist takeover of Paris. Excuse the irony.
Carrie Bradshaw stayed at the Plaza Athénée in the final two episodes of Sex And The City and believe me, the hotel is as glamorous as the television series. In a typically Parisian manner, the luxury is in the details. Nothing is flaunted around – editors sit calmly and discuss the latest fashion trends as food writers gush over the elegantly prepared plat du jour (dish of the day). Located in the famous triangle d’Or (golden triangle), the hotel is surrounded by all of the elite fashion boutiques – Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior. This is the perfect place to stop and relax after doing some major damage to your credit card.
Put it this way, if you haven’t tried Christophe Michalak’s desserts, you haven’t lived! Over tea, une religieuse au caramel au beurre salé (salted caramel religieuse – no idea in English…) and une tartelette aux fraises des bois (wild strawberry tartlette), the making of a great friendship was cemented. That’s the thing about the Plaza Athénée – it is a place to make memories.
La Cour Jardin is open between May and September. Have you been there? I’m keen to hear about your experience.
